Definitions of commonly used terms referenced throughout the research catalogue

The PeptideX Research Glossary provides definitions of commonly used terms referenced throughout the research catalogue. These definitions are intended for informational and educational purposes within laboratory and analytical research contexts.

A

Acetate Salt
A salt form where a compound is associated with an acetate counterion. Salt forms may be referenced in research contexts for handling characteristics and material specification consistency.
Amino Acid Sequence
The specific order of amino acids that defines a peptide's molecular structure and functional characteristics. Each sequence determines the peptide's three-dimensional conformation and interaction properties within experimental systems.
Analytical Purity
A measure of compound composition and consistency as determined through laboratory analytical methods. Purity is typically assessed using techniques such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or mass spectrometry to quantify the proportion of target compound relative to impurities or degradation products.

B

Batch Consistency
A quality metric describing the uniformity of material composition across separate production or research batches. Consistency is evaluated through comparative analysis of physical, chemical, and analytical properties to ensure reproducibility in experimental research.

H

HPLC
High-performance liquid chromatography. An analytical separation technique that pushes a sample through a packed chromatographic column under high pressure, resolving the mixture into individual peaks for quantitative purity assessment. In peptide research it is widely used to confirm batch identity and quantify analytical purity against a reference standard.

I

In Vitro
A research term referring to studies conducted outside of living organisms, typically in controlled laboratory environments such as test tubes, culture dishes, or other artificial systems. In vitro experiments allow for precise control of experimental variables and direct observation of molecular interactions.

L

Lyophilized
A preservation process involving freeze-drying to remove moisture from a compound while maintaining molecular structure and stability for long-term storage. The lyophilization process involves freezing the material and then reducing surrounding pressure to allow frozen water to sublimate directly from solid to vapor phase.
Lyophilized Powder
A freeze-dried material format used to reduce moisture content and support stability during storage and handling in research environments.

M

Molecular Signaling
The process by which molecules transmit signals within experimental systems, often studied through peptide–receptor interaction models. Molecular signaling encompasses the binding of signaling molecules to specific receptors and the subsequent cascade of intracellular events that propagate the signal.

P

Peptide
A short chain of amino acids linked by peptide bonds. Peptides are studied in laboratory research for their structural, signaling, and interaction properties. They are typically classified by length: dipeptides (2 amino acids), tripeptides (3 amino acids), oligopeptides (2-20 amino acids), and polypeptides (20+ amino acids).
Peptide Stability
A research term describing the resistance of a peptide to degradation under defined storage and experimental conditions. Stability is influenced by factors including temperature, pH, solvent composition, and exposure to light or oxidizing agents. Stability studies examine both chemical degradation and physical aggregation over time.

R

Receptor Binding
A molecular interaction process examined in research environments to understand how peptides interact with specific receptor sites under controlled conditions. Receptor binding studies typically measure affinity (strength of binding), selectivity (specificity for particular receptor subtypes), and kinetics (rates of association and dissociation).
Reconstitution
A laboratory preparation step describing the process of dissolving or rehydrating a material into solution for analytical or experimental workflows.

T

TFA Salt
A salt form associated with trifluoroacetate (TFA) counterion, commonly referenced in peptide synthesis and purification workflows. Used as a specification descriptor in research materials.
